Studying at University in North Cyprus: From Application to Enrolment
A practical roadmap for international students considering a degree in North Cyprus: entry and visa rules, accreditation and home-country recognition, the application-to-enrolment timeline, cost categories, and choosing a city.
This roadmap is written for international students weighing a degree in North Cyprus. It covers the steps that matter most before you commit: entry and visa rules for your nationality, how the higher-education system works and the role of YÖDAK, whether your diploma will be recognised back home, the general application-to-enrolment timeline, the cost categories to plan for, and how to choose a city. Amounts, deadlines and programme requirements vary by university, so this guide states none of them — confirm each with the official source.
Entry and visa rules come first
Before you look at programmes, understand how you will enter the country and on what basis, because this differs by nationality. Entry and visa conditions change, so treat the official source as authoritative and check it close to your travel date. See the TRNC Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa regulations linked at the bottom of this page.
Once you enrol, students pursuing a degree need a student residence permit; that is a separate process handled after arrival. See the Student Residence Permit guide.
Recognition back home: check before you enrol
For an international student this is the single most consequential check. Accreditation inside North Cyprus is granted by YÖDAK (the Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council). Confirm on the YÖDAK website that both the university and your specific programme are recognised.
YÖDAK accreditation, however, governs recognition inside North Cyprus. Whether your diploma is recognised elsewhere is a separate question that depends on your destination:
- Türkiye: recognition runs through the YÖK equivalence (denklik) process, which has its own conditions.
- Any other country: check recognition with that country's competent authority — a ministry of education, a professional body, or a credential evaluator — before you enrol, not after you graduate.
Recognition can differ programme by programme, so no general guarantee is possible. Do this check first; everything else follows from it.
How the system works
North Cyprus has many universities and programmes, with English- and Turkish-taught options. YÖDAK plans and accredits higher education, and its website is where you verify that a university or programme is recognised. Beyond accreditation, compare programmes on language of instruction, entry requirements, and campus location.
Application to enrolment: a general timeline
The order below is general; each university has its own calendar and document list. Exact dates and required documents are intentionally omitted — get them from your chosen university.
Choose a programme and university
Identify your programme and confirm on the YÖDAK website that both the university and the programme are recognised.
Apply and prepare documents
Prepare the documents the university requests. The list varies by university and by your country; the university's official list is what counts.
Acceptance letter
If your application succeeds, the university issues an acceptance letter, which you will need for most of the later steps.
Check entry and visa rules
Check the entry and visa conditions for your nationality against the official source before you travel.
Arrive and enrol
After entering the country, complete your enrolment at the university.
After enrolment: student residence permit
Apply for the student residence permit after arrival — see the Student Residence Permit guide.
Cost categories
Plan your budget around the headings below. Amounts vary by university, city and lifestyle, so none are given here; confirm current figures on the official pages of the university and the relevant institutions.
- Tuition (varies by university and programme)
- Housing (dormitory or rental)
- Food and groceries
- Transport
- Utilities (electricity, water, internet)
- SIM card / phone and internet
- Personal spending and stationery
- Health checks and insurance
Tuition for international students is often set in foreign currency (USD or GBP) or in TL. Today's indicative selling rate: 1 GBP = 62.56537 Jul 2026 ↗ TL, 1 USD = 46.82047 Jul 2026 ↗ TL. To estimate your monthly costs item by item, use the Student Budget Calculator.
Scholarships
Most TRNC government scholarships (Support, State and Merit scholarships) are reserved for TRNC citizens. One exception matters for international students: the TRNC State Scholarship for Foreigners (Scholarship Regulation, Art. 31) is open to third-country nationals — it excludes Türkiye and TRNC citizens — and can cover tuition and/or dormitory fees and/or a stipend, capped at 200 scholarship holders at any time. A ministry committee selects recipients, and payments stop if the recipient does not hold a valid residence permit. Choosing a city
Universities are spread across several cities, and your choice shapes daily life. Nicosia (Lefkoşa) is the capital and holds most administrative offices. Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and Kyrenia (Girne) are coastal cities with large student populations. Lefke and the Güzelyurt/Kalkanlı area are smaller, quieter settlements. Weigh campus location, transport, housing options and the general pace of life together; where possible, research your preferred city before you enrol.
FAQ
Will a North Cyprus degree be recognised in my home country?
Recognition depends on the university, the programme and your home country — no blanket guarantee is possible. First confirm the university and programme are accredited by YÖDAK. Then check recognition with the competent authority in the country where you plan to work or continue studying, before you enrol. For Türkiye specifically, recognition runs through the YÖK equivalence (denklik) process.
What is the language of instruction?
It varies by university and programme; many programmes are taught in English and some in Turkish. Some English-taught programmes require a preparatory year or a language-proficiency test. Confirm the exact language and proficiency requirements on the programme's official page.
How many intakes are there per year?
Application periods vary by university; there are generally fall and spring intakes, and some universities also offer a summer intake. Confirm the current application calendar directly with the university.
What should I check before committing to a university?
Verify on the YÖDAK website that both the university and your intended programme are recognised. Accreditation status is the basic condition for your diploma being recognised later.
Who is eligible for a TRNC state scholarship?
The Ministry's Support, State and Merit scholarships are reserved for TRNC citizens; most international students fall outside them. A separate scholarship, the TRNC State Scholarship for Foreigners, is open to third-country nationals. See [Scholarships & Internships](/en/rehber/egitim/scholarships-internships) for the full picture.
